How Abbeyfield New Zealand is managed
Governing Board
The constitution of Abbeyfield New Zealand Inc is set out in the registered Constitution.
The Board is made up as follows:
- A volunteer Chairperson elected annually by the members
- Four volunteer members elected for two-year terms by the members
- The General Secretary [non voting]
Board meetings
Meetings are held by teleconference on the last Monday of each month, and face-to-face at least twice annually
Board Committees
A Best Practice and Standards committee comprises Board members plus coopted members.
The Board has a Building Guidance and Design committee to review designs and assist Societies develop ideas into projects
Two wholly owned subsidiary companies own property and develop special projects [Abbeyfield Partnerships Ltd and Abbeyfield Housing Co Ltd]
Minutes
Board, committee and company minutes are published and circulated. The General Secretary, who manages the central office, is the hub of communications
Board Roles
Board members accept responsibility to steer particular tactical objectives and chair committees or companies in conjunction with the Board Chairperson and General Secretary. Progress on objectives is reviewed regularly by the Board at its meetings.
General Secretary
The General Secretary is employed by the Board, reports to the Chairperson, and is responsible for supporting the Board, implementing Board policy, serving as company secretary and maintaining an efficiently functioning central office. The General Secretary’s performance is appraised annually.
Champions
Abbeyfield strives to identify and recruit key persons to champion our cause through a network of contacts, officials and volunteers
Training
Ongoing training of staff and Board members is encouraged

The Board is committed to maintaining a high standard in management, development and service delivery.
