Abbeyfield Auckland
Abbeyfield Auckland’s house at 6 Carrie Street, Sandringham provides quality rental accommodation for 11 older persons at an affordable price.
Residents live with independence, companionship and security in a family style environment, and have the support of a live in housekeeper who provides all main meals and helps look after the house.
Opened in 2006, it is very conveniently located with a local shopping centre, medical centre, community centre, bus stops and several churches nearby.

Any single or widowed person over 65 years of age who is able to care for their personal needs independently may be considered for residency.
Even if you have limited assets, if you meet the criteria for a Housing Accommodation Supplement or living alone allowance, the weekly charge will be affordable. Those with modest incomes or savings are also eligible for consideration as residents.

The two storey house was specifically designed and built for us. It is very accessible as it has a large lift serving the upper floor and is level throughout and suitable for wheelchair and walker frame users.
Each resident has their own room which they furnish as they wish, and an ensuite bathroom with a handrail. The seven rooms on the ground floor have a small deck or private patio, and the four rooms on the upper floor have pleasant views from their balconies.

Residents share the ground floor communal dining and lounge areas and kitchen and laundry, and there’s a mobility scooter shed and on-site car parking.
All resident rooms and communal areas have underfloor heating, and the building has modern fire safety and security systems throughout. |

The house is managed by Abbeyfield Auckland Inc, a registered Charitable Trust, and each resident participates in its management through regular discussions and as a member of the House Committee.
Like other Abbeyfield houses, we’re a nonprofit volunteer Society and so are able to provide quality accommodation at an affordable rent because our management costs are kept to a minimum.

The Society was established in 1993 by Marilyn Reynolds, Stephanie Bonny and other dedicated volunteers, and after negotiations the Auckland City Council gifted the site and Housing New Zealand Corporation provided generous loan financing to build the house. In addition ASB contributed grant funds to help with its’ furnishing and Western Springs Rotary has provided some of the landscaping and gardens.
But resident’s views provide the real picture. They recently produced a video on living here and in their own words….
.
“I love Abbeyfield. I really do. The concept just suits me down to the ground. I like the way we have interaction, we have little groups that get together for their knitting. I used to have my own unit but I didn’t like the thought of having to pay the insurances and rates and things like that. It was getting to me and I didn’t want to be bothered with that. And I heard about Abbeyfield and it’s the right place for me.”
“The thing I like about Abbeyfield most is that I’m my own boss. Nobody has to tell me what to do and not to do..… I can continue doing what I’ve been doing all my life, and that’s being independent.”
“When you’ve out and you’re tired it’s just so delightful to know you’re coming home to a hot meal.”
“One of the real bonuses of living at Abbeyfield is being free to come and go and do as I please.”
“I don’t have any worries. I do everything I used to do before I came to Abbeyfield.”
“It offers general companionship and you can be as close or as open as you want to...we’re not confined all together and can come and go and meet up as we like.”
“It is my own home and I can treat it as my own home. I have a couple of very active little grand daughters and they’re always welcome here….We can have our friends come for meals if we so choose and so it really is my own home.”
“The price is right…..it allows me to get a better standard of living at a cheaper price.”
“What do I like about Abbeyfield? It’s got everything going for it. And I’ve got everything going for me.”
