Abbeyfield Westport

A new beginning.......

Abbeyfield is currently evaluating a range of possible options to develop an Abbeyfield house in Westport.

Abbeyfield has formed a steering committee comprised of interested local volunteers. These 'champions' of Abbeyfield are seeking support from the community to develop an Abbeyfield house.

Initially the new group assessed the local demand for Abbeyfield style accommodation. Now a real need has been established they are seeking additional community support in the form of volunteers and funding to develop an appropriate proposal.

At this time [December 2007] the work is well underway. The Steering committee has registered as an Incorporated Society and  completed negotiations with the local council to acquire a Council owned site that will enable an Abbeyfield house to be developed. A concept plan has been commissioned from Andy Clark, the designer of the acclaimed Abbeyfield house in Golden Bay. Fundraising is underway. Local committee members have attended Abbeyfield seminars and meetings to develop expertise in Abbeyfield design and in house and resident management systems.

Abbeyfield Westport is greatful for the strong support of the local council. This concrete evidence of strong local support has encouraged Housing New Zealand Corporation to make a feasibility grant to develop the project further.

Site selection and project development

We intend to record a project history on this website.

It doesn't look much now - but we can envision a comfortable, safe and secure home for 10 older people and their housekeeper growing on this site.

This view takes in part of the site lying to the north. Close to ammenities and the main street, the site is outside the flood risk area.
