Our history in Whangarei
The development of an Abbeyfield house in Whangarei was first explored during 1995. The local Society was formed in February 1996. Various fundraising and development ideas were explored in the suceeding years but it was not until Abbeyfield New Zealand proposed using funds supplied by residents to build a house that the Whangarei project took shape.
Construction of the house was facilitated through an interest free advance from Abbeysupport Ltd, arranged by its Director Hugh Thurston a long time supporter of Abbeyfield.

The attached photo shows the Governor General of New Zealand Dame Silvia Cartwright officially opening the house on March 13th 2002, accompanied by Dr Thurston.
Additional images of the house are showing in a sequence above.

After initially operating as a retirement village where residents purchased "licences" to occupy their suites, the house experienced financial difficulties and closed in 2010. It was then sold to a charitable trust who have leased the property to Abbeyfield New Zealand to enable it to be run as a rental house.
Abbeyfield reopened the house on June 3rd 2011.
If you have an interest in exploring whether the Abbeyfield lifestyle is for you, please contact the Secretary (his contact details are set out below). An information pack and application form will be sent to you, and a visit to the house arranged.
Abbeyfield Whangarei is run by a committee of nine. If you have an interest in older peoples welfare or experience in social housing, governance or finance we would like you to talk to us about supporting this house with your skills.
