Guiding Principles

The Guiding Principles:

For all countries the vision and principles established by Carr-Gomm remain true, and each country and that country’s affiliate Societies operate according to ‘The Guiding Principles’.

Abbeyfield is a voluntary effort by people of goodwill to assist older people to achieve a fulfilling way of life. The members of an Abbeyfield Society believe:

that many older people suffer from loneliness and insecurity;

that older people have an important role to play in lives of their families, friends
and communities;

within each community, individuals can work together to help older people have a secure and comfortable life within the companionship of a small household.

The Abbeyfield method of operation is:

to establish local Abbeyfield Societies and to involve volunteers in setting up and managing houses, where the residents will pay their share of the costs;

every household will have its own housekeeper to look after the house, and to provide the main meals, and to care generally for the residents;

each resident will have their own room, furnished as they wish, where both their privacy and their right to invite visitors are assured;

such houses are intended to become focal points of goodwill and friendly contact within the local community.’

Why do we need Abbeyfield Houses?

Loneliness can be a particular burden for older people. Often sons, daughters and family members live in other towns, cities or overseas. As we grow older our neighbours and close friends move away or die and our social networks, so vital to our wellbeing and independence, begin to reduce.

Abbeyfield was established to provide companionship in a small domestic scale house, for the alone and lonely older person; to break the cycle of isolation, despair and depression and to promote older people’s ability to be independent and active contributing members of their community.

An Abbeyfield House completes the range of Aged Care in the community. It offers greater support and social contact than independent living units and provides for those who do not need or want the extra care of a Rest Home.

Enjoying a game of ChessThe Abbeyfield way of life encourages older people to retain an independent lifestyle longer, within a companionable and supportive environment. Along with providing affordable accommodation and freedom from the burden of managing a house and the chore of cooking, Abbeyfield promotes individual independence.
