Volunteer and make a difference

Are you keen to help older people live well or give back to your community? Or perhaps you’d like to share your skills, learn something new or meet interesting people?

Volunteers are our lifeblood

When you volunteer with us you can be sure you’re making a difference in the lives of older people – and it could make a real difference to your life too.
Volunteers are the lifeblood of Abbeyfield: all our Abbeyfield houses were founded and are managed by volunteers. Their contribution ensures the houses remain affordable and residents are well supported. At a national level, volunteer board members and trustees govern various Abbeyfield entities.

I identify with the kaupapa and want my skills to be used to help the elderly who need the opportunity that Abbeyfield offers. – volunteer committee member.

Volunteer Diane Ramsay talks about her role as house manager of Abbeyfield St Francis Way in Nelson.

Volunteering opportunities

We welcome volunteers from all walks of life and offer many different opportunities. Typical roles with the societies that operate Abbeyfield houses include:
• Committee roles, such as chairperson, treasurer, secretary
• House manager
• Resident applications co-ordinator
• Fundraising
• Marketing and publicity
• Maintenance and gardening

If you’d like to help in some other way, we’d love to hear from you. We also welcome short-term volunteering for specific projects and this can be an ideal opportunity for businesses and other organisations to get involved in their local community.
