About this house
.Abbeyfield Alexandra is a community-led initiative working to establish a warm, affordable shared home for older people in the heart of Central Otago.
With more over-65s facing rising rents, housing insecurity, and social isolation, the need for safe, supportive housing is growing. We’re not acting on a whim – we’ve done our homework, explored the Abbeyfield model in depth, and know it’s a natural fit for our region.
We have a promising site near Alexandra’s town centre under option, and planning is already under way. We aim to begin building in late 2026 or early 2027.
The house will offer independent living for 12–14 residents aged 65 and over. Each will have a private studio with ensuite, and share welcoming communal spaces. A housekeeper will prepare two nutritious meals a day, with breakfast available for residents to help themselves.
Rent will be affordable for those living on superannuation and will include meals, accommodation, power, rates, and overheads – with no capital entry fee or licence to occupy.
Abbeyfield Alexandra will be managed by a local volunteer committee, with support from Abbeyfield New Zealand, a registered Community Housing Provider. Nearby Abbeyfield houses in Queenstown and Dunedin show just how well this model works.
How you can help
We’ve laid strong foundations. Now we’re rolling up our sleeves.
Whether you’d like to donate, partner with us, or simply stay informed – we’d love to hear from you. Every conversation brings us one step closer to opening our doors.
To all those who have supported us so far – and to those we’ve yet to meet – thank you! This vision would not be possible without you.
