Abbeyfield Masterton redevelopment completed
The redevelopment of Abbeyfield Masterton is now complete and residents have moved in to the new studios. This has been a complex project, so it’s fantastic to see it all finally come together.
Four new studios have been built, taking the total number of studios to 14. New lounge, dining and kitchen areas were completed earlier in the year. A heritage building which used to house the lounge, dining room and kitchen was moved off the site in April to make way for the redevelopment.
The redevelopment was undertaken by Abbeyfield Properties in conjunction with Abbeyfield Masterton. Under an agreement with Te Tūāpapa Kura Kāinga – Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, the four new studios are available only to people on the Public Housing Register, and Abbeyfield is paid an operating supplement for them. This agreement is a first for Abbeyfield, and is a pilot arrangement.
The new studios will help meet the huge demand for affordable housing for older people in the Wairarapa area. Abbeyfield residents are selected on the basis on financial, housing, and social need.
An opening celebration is planned for 2023.
