About Abbeyfield Wānaka
We are planning to establish an Abbeyfield House in Wānaka, to provide affordable shared rental housing for independent over-65s.
Many of our older people are struggling to find affordable housing. As rents skyrocket and the available stock of long-term rental properties shrinks, retirees are faced with tough choices, such as having to leave the region.
But there is hope. A group of local residents has come together with a simple, powerful solution: an Abbeyfield House in Wānaka. The house would be similar to other Abbeyfield houses in New Zealand, offering independent living in a warm, supportive environment.
The planned house
The house will cater for 12-14 over-65s and each resident will have their own private studio with ensuite and access to shared living areas. A housekeeper will provide two nutritious meals a day, plus a self-service breakfast.
The rent will cover accommodation, meals, power, rates and overheads, and will be affordable for people reliant on superannuation for their income. There will be no licence to occupy or capital entry charge.
The house will be managed by Abbeyfield Wānaka, a committee of volunteers who care about older people.

Abbeyfield Wānaka Incorporated was established in 2024, with the vision of providing an affordable housing option for those who can’t afford to own a home in retirement.
It is a registered charity (CC62856), and is affiliated to Abbeyfield New Zealand, a Registered Community Housing Provider.
