Abbeyfield Waimakariri – planned development

Abbeyfield Hornby

An existing Abbeyfield house in Hornby, Christchurch

Can you help build a senior's future today?

Elsewhere on this website you will read about the Abbeyfield mission to help seniors who, for whatever reason, have limited resources, are often socially isolated, and just need somewhere to live independently and safely.

Life is too short for a senior person to live with loneliness and financial pressures.

Abbeyfield Waimakariri Inc now has the perfect site in Kingsbury Ave, Rangiora, to build a house where 14 independent seniors can rent one of the purpose-built ensuite studio apartments in a supported family-life setting.

Now our focus is on fundraising to develop that Abbeyfield house.

We invite expressions of interest from prospective residents to go on our waiting list. Please register your interest by clicking on the button below.

Flatting for Seniors

By 2040 only half of New Zealand’s over-65s will own their own home, predicts Ageing Well Principal Investigator Dr Kay Saville-Smith in a recent 2026 Helen Clarke Foundation Report.

That’s only 14 years’ away, so now is the right time for Waimakariri to have the innovative ‘flatting for seniors’ model of housing Abbeyfield offers.

Abbeyfield Waimakariri volunteers are currently fundraising to build a 14-studio house in Kingsbury Ave, Rangiora, that will provide private and shared spaces for single independent seniors. The affordable rent will include all meals, power and other overheads.

The house plan will be available soon and fundraising is ramping up.
